Envol Funér'Air: Provider of funeral innovations

Reinventing scattering

How the
project began

Envol Funér’Air was born of the encounter between Jean de Montgolfier, a former military pilot, and Dominique Boittin, founder of an engineering and industrial design group, partnered with leading automotive and aircraft manufacturers.

One fundamental question

"Would it be possible to scatter ashes by plane?"

This was the recurring question that led to the creation of Envol Funér’Air. The answer was clearly no, for many reasons, such as the complexity of this service and, quite simply, the speed of air, which is incompatible with a gentle ash scattering.

But while this question necessarily calls for a negative answer, it also highlights the desire of many individuals and families to be able to scatter funeral ashes in the hearth of nature, for a majestic and soothing farewell.

Meeting these expectations was therefore a major challenge.
The idea of using drones quickly took hold, but there were many ethical and technological hurdles to overcome.

7 years of development

A technological and ethical service

Seven years of development were needed to create a system that combines a technical urn with an associated scatterer, which is compatible with professional drones and ensures a gentle and complete scattering of ashes.

It takes more than technological innovation to ensure the reliability of a service that is far from trivial.

Therefore, from 2018 to 2022, Envol Funér’Air itself carried out a number of ash scatterings in the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel, in order to obtain feedback that would validate the technological innovations as well as the project as a whole.

Two things became obvious:

The system works perfectly thanks to years of technological development...

... and funeral professionals will be the only ones authorized to provide this service, since family satisfaction necessarily depends on a code of ethics and respect that only they can guarantee.

In 2023, Envol Funér’Air focused on its commercial development. There is a clear interest in our innovations, both in France and abroad. However, our many discussions with small and medium-sized businesses show that they are not in a position to offer this service themselves, and would like to be able to call on a service provider.

Mutualizing this service is the key to enabling them to offer families the gentle scattering of ashes in nature.
At the end of 2023, Envol Funér’Air decided to make the technologies and equipment it had developed available to service providers, such as remote pilots and associations.
